General Information
Attacking is not the same as Defending
When attacking you are limited in the number of troops you can use. Therefore, you want them to be your strongest. Troops are, from weakest to strongest, T1 - T2 - T3 - T4 - T5. The other variables in the troops, mounted v. ground etc, will depend on the boosts you have from things such as knights, elixirs, dragon skin. You may see that in tomb rallies a meat shield of T3 or lower will be sent. A meat shield is only helpful when attacking an opponent who is not going to run away and for whom you have a full scouting report.
When defending your own account you are not limited to an amount of troops. A meat shield of lower level troops is then very helpful to have to protect your very expensive T4. You will want to remember though that your altar and hospital may only hold so many troops and that those that die first will quickly fill it up. If these fill up and then your T4 die, they will be lost. So stay shielded when you're not actively playing.
Understanding Life vs Defense vs Attack
Thoughts from our former member SimpL/Pius:
The way I understand it is that the three types work like a fighting video game like mortal combat (street fighter?). Attack is how much damage you inflict by striking the other person. Defense minimizes the impact of the other person's strike on you. Life increases the amount of damage you can sustain before dying. For example.... The person on the right has 2400 life. You have to get that down to zero to beat them. If you boost life, it raises that 2400.
